Even if you are not usually an early riser, this memorial in Emu Park, on Queensland’s Capricorn Coast, may have you hitting the pillow early to rise with the sun.
That’s the best time to reflect quietly on the purpose of this tribute, watch as the figures on the memorial transform from shadows into soldiers, and to also take photographs of the light-interactive tempered glass monument that captures the landing at Anzac Cove in April 1915. This dawn timing is not by accident as it mirrors when the ANZAC forces landed on the shores of Gallipoli at daybreak.
Its beachside position on a small crest at the edge of the village is also a fitting location that reflects somewhat the escarpment terrain that our fallen heroes faced upon landing that fateful morning, allowing visitors and residents to have a unique and remarkable experience.
The memorial forms part of a ANZAC precinct that includes a self-guided “Gatehouse” interpretive centre, and a commemorative walking trail and boardwalk through to the adjacent headland escarpment. A pleasant stroll will provide a snapshot of all major WWI ANZAC conflicts through interpretive stations and storyboards found amidst viewing decks, shelters, seating areas and places of quiet reflection that all boast spectacular ocean vistas.
